High Speed File Import Speeds Flat ASCII Files

Seven thousand records per second race when compared to three thousand records per minute. Import of files into the Unibase by DMAC release 7.48i has achieved this improvement. This speed change comes at the expense of two features -- the file must be exclusively accessed and no added fields or packed decimal fields are allowed.

The speed of the workstation, the amount of RAM, the speed of the disk and the network topology also affect actual speeds. The command line spawned executable program name is rawdata. The MUI (Menu User Interface) is under Advanced Processing, File Input/Output Functions, then "Read Flat ASCII One Format file." The prior slower, but more feature rich capabilities, still exist. A new, faster way has simply been added.

These changes are part of the DMAC effort to speed up Microsoft operating systems by taking more of the operating system functions into the Unibase Environment. Resting lightly on top of the operating system gives this speed improvement.
