U.S. Post Office Service Approves Classification Reform ProposalsSome Rates Go Down Postal Rates are going down for customers who offer barcoded and carrier route sorted mail. In First-Class Mail, rates for barcoded mail will be reduced two cents, if presorted to five digits, and one cent, if presorted to three digits. A new enhanced carrier route subclass in the Standard Mail class will have lower than current rates due to barcode or delivery sequence sorting requirements. New Reliance on Barcode The new reliance on barcode for obtaining the lowest rates offers the greatest opportunity. Since only a percentage of addresses in the United States are delivery point bar coded, lists will have to be separated into those with and those without barcodes addresses. This is service organization type work. Unibase by DMAC To Print Barcode Unibase by DMAC will have an easy way to print delivery point bar codes around the July 1, 1996 implementation date. The edit functions will be expanded to include "|bc" for bar code output to HP laser jet, Epson, and Postscript printers. Contact U.S. Post Office The U.S. Post Office has detailed information on this new opportunity.
